Tuition to increase for state tech colleges

Eau Claire (WQOW)- Tuition will be going up at the states' tech colleges.

On Wednesday, the Wisconsin Technical College System approved a statewide tuition increase of 4.5 percent next year.  That means the average student will pay about $3,500 a year.  Officials say they tried to limit the increase as much as possible.

"To an individual who is trying to figure out how to support their kids; they are trying to figure out how to pay their gas bill to and from work, which is the life that most of our students find themselves, every dollar is important," explains Wisconsin Technical College System President Morna Foy.

Even with the tuition increase, property taxes in the area are not expected to go up because of money coming in through private donations and grants.  Besides the tuition increase, the big focus of Wednesday's meeting was on ways to close the skills gap here in the state.  That includes the $15 million workforce training bill recently signed by the governor.
