UWSP closer to getting $75 m science center

MADISON (WKOW) -- The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is one step closer to getting a $75 million science center.

The state's Building Commission approved the plan. UWSP Chancellor Bernie Patterson calls the commission's endorsement a "significant milestone in the funding process."

The Legislature's Joint Finance Committee will needs to review the project before it will be included in the overall state budget. Legislators will vote on the full budget in June.

UWSP facilities director Carl Rasmussen tells the Stevens Point Journal the current science building was built in 1963. Besides UW-Madison, the Stevens Point campus had more graduates complete doctorate degrees in science technology, engineering and math than any other UW school from 1997 to 2006.

If the plan is part of the state budget, construction could start in spring 2015 and the building could be finished in two years.
