Wausau man arrested on suspicion of 7th OWI

Lake Hallie (Press Release) - On Thursday March 21, 11:24 p.m. Lake Hallie Police received a citizen complaint of a possible erratic driver on State Highway 29 westbound heading towards Lake Hallie.

Officer Rathke responded and observed the vehicle at Seymour Cray Boulevard. The officer followed the vehicle and confirmed that the vehicle was being operated poorly.

The vehicle was stopped for deviating in the traffic lane and the officer made contact with the driver. It was revealed that the driver had a valid Wisconsin driver's license and six prior OWI convictions.  The officer smelled the odor of an intoxicant on the driver's breath.

The driver voluntarily submitted to field sobriety testing and the officer felt that he failed those tests.  As a result the driver was arrested for Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated-7th Offense (Felony) and for a Probation violation that resulted from this arrest.

Kelly Gene Powers, 50, of Wausau was arrested and transported to the hospital for a legal blood draw. Afterwards he was taken to the Chippewa County Jail. The results of the blood test will not be known for several weeks as it will be sent to the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory. The driver's license also had a restriction on it prohibiting Mr. Powers from driving a vehicle with an alcohol concentration greater than .02.
