Green Bay brothers settle sex abuse lawsuit with Catholic church

GREEN BAY (WKOW) -- Two brothers have settled a sex abuse lawsuit against the Green Bay Catholic Diocese.

For years, Todd and Troy Merryfield have said church officials knew of former priest John Feeney's prior sexual misconduct when he abused the Merryfield brothers in 19-78. In 2002, Feeney was convicted of sexual abuse.

Last May, the Merryfields won a civil trial and were awarded $700-thousand in damages, but the verdict was later overturned. This week, the brothers settled a civil suit for $700-thousand dollars, but they say it was never really about the money.

"What I want is an apology from Bishop Ricken and an apology from Tim Reilly that the diocese knew that John Feeney was a child molester and they enabled him to molest me [and] Todd," says Troy Merryfield.

On Friday, Bishop David Ricken released a statement apologizing to the Merryfield family and asked to meet with the brothers.
