Eau Claire post office picks new location

Eau Claire (WQOW) - After more than a year of discussion, the post office could have a new downtown address.

The U.S. Postal Service recently sent a letter to the City of Eau Claire saying it wants to move its downtown location to the corner of Madison Street and Barstow Street.  That's the site of the old Burger King and would still need to be developed.

The U.S. Postal Service has been looking for a smaller location since last January because of shrinking volumes of mail.  The current facility on Barstow Street is around 26,000 square feet.  In the past, the postal service has said it wanted a building closer to 4,000 square feet.  The city manager hopes the new location could help revitalize North Barstow.

"It's right on the fringe," says Russ Van Gompel, Eau Claire City Manager. "It's helping the North Barstow district area redevelopment and it's also freeing up some space for our JAMF project."

Van Gompel says the city plans it is interested in using the current post office sit to build a parking structure for businesses in that area, including JAMF which is hoping to expand downtown.  There's no word yet when the post office move could happen.
