Possible November referendum for area school district

Cameron (WQOW) - An area school district decides to move ahead with plans for a new elementary school and a referendum to pay for it.

The Cameron superintendent says the district is planning for a November referendum.  Superintendent Randy Braun says the price tag could hit $20 million, $15 million planned for a new elementary and an additional $5 million for renovations at the high school and other projects, like athletic fields.

The superintendent says the existing elementary is 107 years old.  Five additions have also been built, the last one in 1960.  He says the building is overcrowded and outdated and will eventually need expensive, major renovation.

Earlier this winter, the school board bought 80 acres of land for a possible new school.  The district will meet April 17th to talk with engineering firms.
