Altoona bicyclist injured in crash with vehicle

Lake Hallie (Press Release) - On Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at approximately 4:12 a.m., Officer Luke Gehweiler of the Lake Hallie Police was dispatched to a vehicle versus bicycle accident on State Highway 124 at the 40th Avenue intersection.

It was determined that a male bicyclist was crossing State Highway 124 and was struck almost head on by a vehicle traveling the opposite direction.

The vehicle was heading west bound on 40th Avenue and conducting a left hand turn for the purpose of heading south towards the City of Eau Claire when the accident occurred in the intersection. The bicyclist was heading east bound in an attempt to cross State Highway 124 at the intersection of 40th Avenue. Both the vehicle and bicyclist had a green light allowing them to cross the intersection at the same time. Traffic laws require that vehicles conducting a turn in an intersection must yield the right of way to oncoming vehicles, including bicycles.

The vehicle that struck the bicyclist was a 2012 Dodge Journey 4 door, black in color. The bicycle operator was wearing a black jacket and black jeans. The vehicle operator indicated that he did not see the bicyclist prior to the accident. A witness traveling the same direction as the bicyclist also reports not seeing the bicyclist prior to the accident. The vehicle was damaged on the hood and windshield and the bicycle was broken in half from the collision. The injuries to the bicyclist do not appear to be life threatening, however, the injuries required emergency medical care and admittance to the hospital. The bicyclist is still in the hospital at the time of this release.

The operator of the Dodge Journey is Rolland Halvorsen, 65, of Lake Hallie. The bicyclist is Kevin Clarke, 20, of Altoona.

This was the first Lake Hallie bicycle accident of 2013.

In 2012, Lake Hallie had bicycle accidents resulting in injury. On Saturday July 28, 2012 Lake Hallie Police responded to this same intersection (124 and 40th) for a car versus bicyclist Traffic Crash. In that case the investigation determined that the bicyclist (a 14 year old) was in error. The male juvenile was transported to the hospital and treated being released the same day.

Another injury bicycle accident occurred on June 11, 2012 at 11:58am when a bicyclist age 22 struck a car while crossing 30th Ave at CTH-00. The bicyclist was on the bicycle trail and failed to see an oncoming car and drove into its path. Bicycle traffic on the bike trail is required to stop for vehicle traffic on the road and is controlled by a stop sign.
