Police poll shows safety number one priority among Wisconsinites

Eau Claire (WQOW)- The state's largest police union puts hot topics to the test.  The Wisconsin Professional Police Association (WPPA) recently polled 400 people about gun control, shared services and community priorities.

The poll's results on gun control reflected what we see across the country; about a 50-50 split on whether laws should be more strict.  When asked about priorities for public service, 71 percent said keeping the community safe from crime was a top priority; ranking ahead of improving the economy, education or holding the line on taxes and spending.

"We were very pleasantly surprised that keeping the community safe from crime was the number one priority far and away," says Executive Director Jim Palmer.  "That's the instinct and intuition we had on the issue and it's fortunate that the general public feels the same way."

The WPPA says it will use the findings when it works on future legislation.
