Three community gardens get "green thumbs up" from city council

Eau Claire (WQOW) - While the weather might not have you thinking spring, a vote by the Eau Claire City Council might.

Three community gardens were given the "green thumbs up" from the council Tuesday night. One of those will be at Lakeshore park, and will be run by the Randall Park Neighborhood association. Community gardens have been sprouting up in neighborhoods across the city for several years now, and the city has now come up with agreements that must be signed between it and the neighborhood association.

"If people remember, last year we had a little mix-up about composting leaves at the community gardens, and before we could get accurate word out, people had been dropping off their leaves, so now we'll have agreements in place. Because we have an agreement in place, a point person to contact to make sure we'll have accurate information," says Kerry Kincaid, Eau Claire City Council President.

The North Riverfronts Neighborhood Association has decided not to run the community gardens near the Forest Street Park area this year. A Unitarian church has decided to step in and sponsor the gardens, and will be offering food for local non-profit organizations.   The other garden will be at Demmler Park in the Third Ward area.
