Woman in critical condition after Chetek fire

Chetek (WQOW)- A woman is in critical condition after a duplex fire in Chetek.

The fire department was called to a fire on West Stout Street Tuesday night around 9:30 p.m.  A woman's cat woke her up and she then heard the smoke detector going off.

Once on scene, firefighters found another woman, Patricia Grant, unresponsive in one of the units.  She was flown to a burn center in the Twin Cities where she is in critical condition.

"Apparently she was cooking something and maybe fell asleep or who knows what but the origin of the fire is the stove," explains Chetek Fire Chief Joe Atwood.  "Burners were on.  Pans were melted on the stove and that's where the fire started."

Other people living in the duplex made it out safely. The Red Cross is helping them with food, shelter and clothing.
