Barron Co. frac sand mine moves closer to realization

SIOUX CREEK - Plans for a large frac-sand mine in Barron County take a big step forward.

The Sioux Creek Town Board voted unanimously last night to start negotiations with Superior Silica Sands.

The company is planning a sand mine and wash plant on a nearly 600 acre site, southwest of Chetek.

The town and sand company started negotiating Friday on things like the hours of operation, protections for adjoining landowners, and how much money the town will receive for every ton of sand that is moved. That money will be used for infrastructure, road improvements and eventually tax relief.
