Scam targets babysitters

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says there has been a recent incident of scams involving ads for babysitters and nannies.

The scammer posted an internet ad for a babysitter or nanny for $400 a week.  When a person responds to the ad, the employer sends a check for $1,800 with a request to cash it and wire the remaining money back.

The check is not good, and the bank will hold the potential babysitter or nanny responsible for the money, including the money wired to the employer.

The individual involved in the recent incident recognized the employer to be a scammer.
