Blood donor approaches 19-gallon mark

MARSHFIELD (WKOW) -- Seventy-two-year-old Don Nystrom has donated platelets once a month since 1997.  He is now approaching the 19-gallon donation mark.

A platelet donation consists of donating a portion of blood to a centrifuge, which then separates platelets and plasma.  The remainder transfers back to the donor.

Platelet donations are used to treat cancer patients and people recovering from surgery or trauma.

Nystrom has been donating since he retired and he says he wants to help people.
