Marathon County (WAOW) - Marathon County officials revealed that corrections officers are now carrying tasers, after a jailhouse attack last week.

At a news conference Tuesday, Chief Deputy Scott Parks says corrections officer Julie Christensen is still in intensive care at the hospital after being hit by an inmate.

Sheriff's officials say the attack happened March 27, after some inmates refused to hand over meal trays and the jail was put on lockdown.

Parks says Fredrick Morris, 20, hit Christensen. She collapsed and was unconscious.

Parks also said that Morris hit officer Denny Woodward in the face.

Officials say additional corrections officers arrived to the scene of the attack and inmates went back to their assigned cells.

When the inmates were back in their assigned areas, medical staff arrived to help Christensen and Woodward.

Woodward was treated at the hospital and has been released.

Marathon County officials say they waited to release details about the attack at the request of the officers' families.

An independent panel of community leaders will take a look at safety and staffing concerns at the jail. That panel will create a report to hand over to the new sheriff.

Sheriff's officials say Morris has been taken to the Lincoln County jail.
