Eau Claire (WQOW) - Chapter books are a milestone for young children. Now, a local school will have more options for kids to reach for the stars.
RCU and WQOW News 18 presented Meadowview Elementary with a $300 Tools for Schools grant. Shannon Bignell, a literacy coach at the Eau Claire school, applied for the award. The money will be used to expand the Sparklers book series, which Bignell says meets the needs of so many students at different grade levels. "They are characters kids can relate to, real-life lessons. The great thing about these books is that they talk about the vocabulary words that are in it beforehand. They are short chapters... they're manageable. Kids that don't have a lot of reading stamina can sit down and read a chapter in a short amount of time and come back to it, so they've just been wonderful," said Bignell.
Tools for Schools is a partnership between RCU and WQOW News 18. We are taking nominations for the next $300 award. If you'd like to apply, click here.
