MARATHON COUNTY (WKOW) -- Marathon County jailers have started carrying stun guns following an attack that injured two corrections officers, including one who remains hospitalized in intensive care.
36-year-old Julie Christiansen was injured in last week's attack; she remains in the ICU at a Wausau area hospital with head injuries. The other officer injured in the attack was treated at the hospital and released.
Prior to the attack, officers only carried pepper spray because administrators feared inmates would take other weapons and use them against the jailers.
The inmate involved in the attack, 20-year-old Fredrick Morris, has been transferred to the Lincoln County jail as authorities investigate the incident.
Marathon County officials say staffing levels and communication system failures at the jail were not a factor in the assault.
