Mark Pocan discusses sequester effects with UW researchers

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- The budget sequester took effect more than a month ago, reducing federal spending almost across the board.

Wednesday, Wisconsin Congressman Mark Pocan spoke with researchers at UW-Madison about how the cuts will impact their work. Last month, UW President Kevin Reilly announced approximately $35 million in cuts for current and future research.

Pocan says these kind of reductions not only affect the university but the private-sector as well, "This university has a tremendous affect on being able to have spin-off companies that help the economy, that create jobs and all sorts of innovation. But it has to start somewhere and you're not necessarily seeing it happen in the private-sector."

The sequester was originally designed to be so painful, Congress would have no other choice but to come up with a solution to avoid the cuts. More than a month in, there's still no sign of a deal.
