Department of Revenue offering free tax help

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- It's tax season again, and with the April 15th deadline quickly approaching, the Wisconsin Department of Revenue is offering free tax assistance to taxpayers at volunteer sites across the state.

DOR Secretary Richard Chandler stopped by Wake Up Wisconsin to talk about how you can get help filing your income tax returns at more than 200 (VITA) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites across the state.

"It is very important that taxpayers have the resources and help they need to file their taxes," Chandler said. "The trained volunteers at these free tax assistance sites are available to answer questions and prepare and e-file tax returns. However, these sites are just one of many tools available to taxpayers to help with the tax filing process and we encourage taxpayers to visit our website for more information and assistance."

Call 211 or 1-800-906-9887 to find a VITA site near you.  Trained volunteers are available to help low-to-moderate income residents, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities prepare their tax returns for free.  You can also visit www.irs.gov or download the WI Revenue mobile app from the Apple or Android store.

Local DOR sponsored sites include:

Madison, the Villager Mall Financial Education Center on 2300 S. Park                                       M-W 12-6 and Sat 9-3

Madison, Hawthorne Library on 2707 E. Washington                                                               April 6th, appointment only call 608-266-6350

Stoughton, City Hall on 724 East Main                                                                                 Thursday 12-5, appointment only, closes April 11th
