UPDATE: Regents confirm Blank as new UW-Madison chancellor

MADISON (WKOW) -- The UW Board of Regents on Friday unanimously confirmed Rebecca M. Blank as the next chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, according to a news release issued by the university. The vote happened at the Regents meeting in La Crosse.

Blank, an economist, is currently serving as the acting secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

She will start her new job as chancellor in mid-to-late July, succeeding David Ward, who has served as interim chancellor for the past two years.

MADISON (WKOW) – The University of Wisconsin System's Board of Regents will meet on Friday to consider if Rebecca Blank will be the next chancellor of UW-Madison.

Rebecca Blank, the former U.S. Secretary of Commerce, was recommended for the position last month by a search committee.  Blank holds a doctorate degree in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Blank says her top priorities in Madison will include placing a strong emphasis on fundraising.

Republican state Rep. Steve Nass has opposed her selection because he says her credentials are impressive but he's worried that her policies will lead to unaffordable tuition's.

The board will also consider the selection of James Schmidt to lead UW-Eau Claire on Friday.  Schmidt was the vice-president for university advancement at Winona State University in Minnesota.
