Car in pond turns out to be empty

WAUNAKEE (WKOW) -- Emergency crews were called Friday morning to a report of a car submerged in a pond. Authorities say it was empty.

"We've spoken to the registered owner who was driving it. He said he swerved to miss a coyote and hit some mud and it sucked him down into the pond. He didn't feel it was necessary to call anyone else," said Lt. Jeff Blakley with the Dane County Sheriff's Department. "A passerby noticed it this morning and we responded in emergency mode, of course, thinking we might be in a rescue situation."

The car had been sitting in the pond since Wednesday night. Firefighters removed it.

The car's owner will be billed for the extraction.
