Altoona (WQOW) - A local event aims to provide a better prom experience to area girls who otherwise may not be able to afford it.
"Once Upon a Prom" wrapped up today at the Hillcrest Country Club in Altoona. Girls are given hair and makeup lessons, and ultimately a prom dress which has been donated from other area high school students. In return, girls must complete six hours of volunteer work at a community service they get to pick.
"Prom is one of those events where as a girl, you remember it for the rest of your life. I remember the dresses that I wore and the friends that I went to prom with still today. And we just really didn't want anyone to miss out on that, anyone to have to look back and say I never got to go to my prom," said Jennifer Rooney, who helps coordinate the event.
The Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Chippewa Valley helped organize the event, while area businesses donated jewelry and hairstylists. The second annual event will provide around 85 girls with dresses for their proms.
