Update: Kappus Drive fire still under investigation

Posted:

EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) - The exact cause of a fire on Eau Claire's south side is still unknown.

Officials are still investigating the fire that broke out early Sunday morning at an apartment complex on Kappus Drive. Fire inspectors tell us it started in the kitchen of one of the apartments. It is not considered suspicious.

A woman who lives there was sleeping at the time, but was woken up by the smoke and escaped. Another person who lives in the building says he alerted other residents, including children, and everyone got out safely.

The fire was contained to the apartment, but the entire building had extensive smoke damage.

Eau Claire (WQOW) - People inside an Eau Claire apartment building woke to fire alarms early Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called to Kappus Drive just after 4 a.m. It's not clear yet how the fire started, but no one was hurt. One person who lives inside the apartment complex got outside quickly, but says he went back in when he realized some of his neighbors were still in the building.

"The first thing that I had on my mind was the children's safety. There were three little kids in the house, as well as two adults. I told them, I was screaming at the top of my lungs "Get out! Get out! Get out! And they were scrambling around the room trying to get their stuff. I was like "I need to do something right now," so I just took my elbow and pounded the window," said Mahdie Al-Habarneh.

Habarneh helped pull 3 children and two adults from the building. Firefighters were able to put out the flames quickly, and the fire did not spread to other units. There is about $25,000 in damage. The Red Cross is helping one person find a place to stay.
