Jail, probation for mother in infant's death

MADISON (WKOW) – A mother who caused the death of her baby has been sentenced to probation, which includes a year in jail.

Judge Stephen Ehlke imposed and stayed an eight-year prison sentence for 29-year-old Anne Olson of Prairie du Sac.

Ehlke said that he couldn't be sure what caused the death of 2-month-old Gabriel Olson in August of 2011 even after all of the medical and scientific testimony in the case.

Earlier, Olson pleaded guilty to second-degree reckless homicide.  The defense argued Olson had been drinking, fell asleep on the couch, woke up and picked the baby up, then tripped and fell on top of him.

According to the State Journal, the child's death was attributed to multiple head and abdominal injuries, which included skull and rib fractures.
