Eau Claire (WQOW) -- The UW-Eau Claire softball team was scheduled to play a WIAC doubleheader at UW-Stout Wednesday afternoon, but because of impending weather, that's been postponed until Thursday, April 18th.
The Blugolds are back indoors Tuesday at the McPhee center. UW-Eau Claire did get to play four conference games over the weekend down at UW-Platteville. It was a makeshift setup on the Pioneers' football field, but the Blugolds won all four games, and playing outside somewhere, is better than not playing at all.
"We just want to play," says UWEC head coach Leslie Huntington, "and to be able to get outside where the outfielders can get some spatial awareness and our infielders and outfielders can work together for that spatial awareness, we practiced outside on the turf at Carson Park yesterday and normally Monday's our day off, but since we looked at it, it was the best weather day this week and so we had to take advantage of being outside yesterday."
"Just to get outside yesterday and kind of just enjoy the elements like it was rather than getting stuck inside," says UWEC senior first baseman Sarah Fern, "working on that, even in a dome you don't get that kind of stuff, the breeze and that kind of stuff, it was really kind of nice just to be outside."
UW-Eau Claire is scheduled to play at UW-Oshkosh Saturday and Sunday.
"The players I feel really bad for right now are our seniors," says Huntington, "their chance to play at home at all this year is being significantly threatened, and I just hope that there's maybe some good karma in all this and we will get to play at home in late May when it's really exciting."
"We've been working our butts off all year and definitely our chemistry has just come so far so quickly and nicely," Fern says, "we're playing really good games, we're being very aggressive and confident, and I think that's going to end up being the thing that keeps us going."
