Family: Suspect in Capitol officer stabbing off medication

WEST ALLIS (WKOW) -- Family members of the man accused of stabbing a Capitol police officer say he was off his medication.

Police have not identified the 25-year-old West Allis man.

His family members say he didn't have a grudge with the state, but simply refused to take his medication for his mental illness.

"He's had issues psychologically for a while, and I think that if he's on proper medication he's a great guy. But when he doesn't get medicated the right way, it tends to throw him off the handle," says his brother Travis.

The suspect's family also apologized to the injured officer, Greg Friberg.

Friberg was stabbed twice in the neck Wednesday.

He remains in stable condition.
