Counterfeit money popping up in Madison

MADISON (WKOW) -- Counterfeit $100 bills have been popping up this past week in the West Towne area.

Tuesday evening, someone tried to pass a bogus $100 bill at Metcalfe's on Mineral Point Rd.  Upon inspection, it turned out to be a $5 bill doctored up to look like a $100 bill.  An employee confiscated the phony money and the shopper left empty-handed.

The suspect was described as wearing a lot of makeup and false eyelashes.  The person also wore a black leather coat and gray leggings.  It is unsure if the shopper was a man or woman as the person spoke with a deep voice.

Last week Friday, a person successfully passed an altered $5 bill as a $100 bill at Kirlin's Hallmark in West Towne Mall.

A short time later, a second person entered the same store and tried to pull off the same crime. That bill was not accepted.

The first shopper was described as being a 20-year-old male with a stocky build; wearing a dark baseball cap, jeans, and black jacket with a one-inch horizontal stripe across the chest and down the sleeves.

The second shopper was also described as a 20-year-old male wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, dark stocking cap and white sneakers.
