UW-Eau Claire considering making a major change with minors

Eau Claire (WQOW)- UW-Eau Claire is looking to make a major change when it comes to students completing a minor.

The university says it is considering dropping its requirement to have each student complete a minor before graduation.  UW-Eau Claire says students will still be able to get a minor, but it will now be optional instead of mandatory.  Right now, UW-Eau Claire is the only UW school that still requires a minor. The hope is that getting rid of the requirement will get all students out the door in four years.

"Our transfer students are affected because they are often in almost all cases coming from institutions that don't require a minor," explains UW-Eau Claire's Dr. Bob Knight.  "So they've come in and all of a sudden they have to come up with a 24-credit minor and it delays their graduation with the result that there is a significant percentage of transfer students that decide to leave and pursue their degrees elsewhere."

UW-Eau Claire says it is still considering its options at this point and will make a final decision in the next few weeks.  The change wouldn't take place until the 2015 school year.
