Elk Mound (WQOW) -- Elk Mound's softball team has managed to play one game this season, indoors, April 4 at the West St. Paul Dome, as the Mounders defeated Menomonie, 6-4.
Last year the Mounders took second in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference with a 13-3 conference record. Elk Mound then lost in a WIAA Division 3 sectional final to Grantsburg.
The Mounders return all but one starter from that team, and head coach Kari Kallio says her team is eyeing another deep playoff run.
"We have really extensive post season experience," says Kallio, "this team has made it to the regional championship at minimum, every year since they were freshman. So making it to the sectional final last year was big and they're hungry to get back there again."
"Ever since we were little, we've been playing together, us group of seniors," says Elk Mound senior shortstop Becca Kopp, "our dream ever since we were little was to be at the state tournament. Last year we were really close and this year we want to go out with a bang."
The Mounders are hoping that having played one game this season gives them a bit of an edge over their DSC rivals.
"I think it's a really big advantage for us," Kopp says, "because we got experience to play in a dome and getting on the field, that just makes us want to play more."
Elk Mound senior outfielder Katie Bergh says, "It's a great advantage because we can face the live pitcher and we can work together. It's nice to be able to play the game and get out there."
"I think it was good for them to get out and play," says Kallio, "but we haven't been on dirt yet, and I think that is key as well. But to see them play as a team and play good team defense and see other pitchers, I think that was very important."
Elk Mound is scheduled to play at defending Dunn-St. Croix Conference champion Pepin/Alma, Monday.
