Suspect facing homicide charges for ax attack

JANESVILLE (WKOW)-- Police have captured a Janesville man who they say attempted to kill his ex-girl friend and her male companion with an ax.

Police officers were called to the 400 block of South Main Street in Janesville late Saturday night. The suspect Jeffrey Starkman fled the scene on foot. K-9 units and detectives were immediately called in.

"They had it pretty secured. I mean, they were doing their job definitely," says Chad Scheidegger who watched from the sidewalk as police conducted their investigation. "They were all here with their flash lights and looking for any evidence that they could find."

Scheidegger and his wife heard the news and decided to walk to the scene of the attack. Scheidegger says had previously lived in the home next door and says the neighborhood has had it's fair share of criminal activity, but things were improving over the last few years.

"It's getting better. It's getting cleaned up. I mean, 3,4 or 5 years ago a lot of drug activity and stuff like that was happening," Scheidegger says.

He and nearby neighbors were relieved after hearing Starkman was finally caught. An officer found a car that met the description of Starkman's vehicle and attempted to pull him over on Interstate 90. Police say Starkman kept driving, but eventually pulled off the interstate at the 185 mile marker. Police captured him around 7:00 am at a truck stop in Beloit.

Even though police say the attack was an isolated incident and both victims only received non-life threatening injuries, neighbors are still shooken up by the ordeal.

"You know all it takes is the right mixture of anger and rage for someone to go off like this," Scheidegger says.

Starkman is facing charges on two counts of 1st degree Intentional Homicide, Fleeing an Officer, and Burglary while Armed. He is currently being held at the Rock County jail.
