Eau Claire (WQOW) -- The Eau Claire Regis softball team spends another day in the gym, Monday.  The Ramblers have had five games postponed already.

Regis returns six starters from the team that went 7-7 in the Western Cloverbelt last year, but the rest of the Ramblers team will be very young.  Head coach Mark Wirz says Regis looks to be competitive in what figures to be a tough conference race.

"I think if our pitching holds up we'll be able to hang in most games," says Wirz, "and if our defense takes care of the routine plays, I think we'll do very well and be very competitive."

Regis is scheduled to host McDonell in a conference doubleheader, Tuesday, April 22.

"We don't have those first couple of non-conference games as a cushion," says Ramblers senior pitcher Rachel Liming, "so we have to start right out in the conference and make and impact from the beginning of our season."

Because of all the weather-related postponements, Regis has six doubleheaders on its schedule.  Wirz says it's important for his team to start hot right out of the gate.

"Mental toughness comes in," Wirz says,  "playing two games in a row is difficult. You can win the first one, be satisfied, and give the second one away with your attitude. So hanging in there for two games is tough. Especially when we're going to do it six or seven times during the year. This is uncharted water for everybody."

"I say we definitely need to win our first couple conference games because that will give us confidence," says Ramblers senior infielder/outfielder Sarah Clark, "and then just make sure that we play to our best ability because there is not much time to waste."
