UPDATE: Worker killed on UW campus identified

UPDATE (WKOW) --  The Dane County Medical Examiner released the name of the man killed Tuesday while working on the UW campus.

63-year-old Kenneth J. Newman of Prairie du Sac died as a result of the injuries received from the accident.

The case remains under investigation by the UW Police Department and the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office.

MADISON (WKOW) -- Beneath the steel of an industrial lift, a 62-year-old maintenance worker for the UW-Madison lost his life.

Campus police say the lift at a loading dock at the Art Lofts building collapsed on him, as he was working underneath it.

"I was saddened to learn of the death of an employee this afternoon related to an on-the-job incident," Interim Chancellor David Ward said in a statement.

Campus Police said a witness alerted 9-11. The Madison Fire Department responded, using heavy rescue equipment. However, by that time, it was too late.

"They were able to lift the mechanism off of him. They worked on him with CPR to try and revive him. He was transported to UW Hospital where sadly he didn't make it," UW Police Spokesman Marc Lovicott said.

Lovicott said UW Physical Plant will investigate the lift mechanism to figure out what went wrong.

The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office will release the man's name and official cause of death after they finish their examination.

And after the man's family is notified, UW-Madison will share more information to recognize his career and service to the community, according to Ward.
