Appeals court sides with county in case about benefits

Posted:

Eau Claire County (WQOW) -  There has been a major reversal in a court case pitting the sheriff against the county.

A Wisconsin appeals court has reversed a county judge's ruling and has sided with Eau Claire County in its battle with Sheriff Ron Cramer and Eau Claire County Treasurer Larry Lokken.  Last year, they won a lawsuit against the county for taking money out of their paychecks to pay their retirement benefits.

Cramer and Lokken had claimed the state constitution prevented changing their compensation during their term in office, but the appeals court sided with the county, saying fringe benefits do not count as compensation.
