Statewide tornado drill postponed to Friday

EAU CLAIRE (Press Release) - Due to the threat of severe weather in Wisconsin on Thursday, April 18, the scheduled statewide tornado drill will be postponed until Friday, April 19.

Citizens and businesses are advised to take cover should a Tornado Watch or Warning be issued by the National Weather Service anytime on Thursday.

If there is no severe weather on Friday, April 19 the statewide tornado drill will occur.  The drill will follow the same schedule, with the National Weather Service issuing a mock Tornado Watch at 1:00 P.M. followed by a mock Tornado Warning at 1:45 P.M.  The issuance of the mock Tornado Warning will activate the outdoor warning sirens within Eau Claire County, including all cities, towns and villages.  In the event there is severe weather anywhere in Wisconsin on Friday, April 19 the drill will be canceled; it will not be rescheduled.

Citizens and businesses are reminded that even in the absence of any statewide drill, they should revisit their plan for severe weather including their tornado response.  During severe weather, individuals should seek shelter in the lowest level of their residence or business in an interior, windowless room and take actions to cover their head and neck while remaining as low as possible.  Should a citizen find themselves outdoors and unable to seek shelter, they should lie in a low lying area and cover their head and neck.  Avoid seeking shelter under bridges or overpasses.

In addition to seeking shelter, residents and businesses are reminded that outdoor warning sirens are intended exclusively to warn those outdoors, and should not be thought of as interior warning devices.  Eau Claire County Emergency Management encourages all citizens and businesses to have a NOAA Weather Radio for interior warning purposes.
