UW-Stout receives grant for wetland study

MENOMONIE - In western Wisconsin, researchers are getting a large grant to study small ponds.

UW-Stout has received a grant of more than a half-million dollars from the National Science Foundation. Professors and students will use the funding to study seasonal wetland patches that may fill up in the spring, then completely dry out at other times. The study area is near the Chippewa County Forest.

Researchers say the wetlands are a critical breeding habitat for declining frog and salamander populations. But they say the wetlands are not well-protected by conservation laws and are easy to destroy by filling in with dirt.
