Final legislative hearing on budget planned

MADISON (WKOW) – The public will get its last chance on Thursday to testify about Gov. Scott Walker's two-year spending plan before the Legislature's budget committee.

The Legislature's Join Finance Committee is holding the fourth and final public hearing in Baldwin.

The Republican-controlled committee plans to reconvene at the Capitol next week to begin taking votes on changes to Walker's proposal.

The committee typically begins making decisions about low-cost items in the plan before taking on the biggest pieces which will most likely happen later in May.  Lawmakers will receive new estimates sometime in May on how much the state will have in tax revenues, which will help guide their decisions.

Some of the bigger items in Walker's budget include expanding the private school voucher program to nine cities, rejecting federal Medicaid matching dollars and cutting income taxes.
