Airport furloughs start Sunday

WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- Airport delays may go to a whole new level next week as air traffic controller furloughs kick in on Sunday.

Thursday, federal officials said those unpaid days off, forced by the federal budget sequester, could result in significant flight delays at every major airport in the country.

Transportation officials say they have no choice but to cut controller staffing by 10 percent, which will reduce how many planes airports can handle.

But a spokeswoman for the airline industry said the furloughs are unnecessary and airlines are considering suing the government.

Along with delays, the airport cuts will close some smaller airports in Wisconsin, including Janesville's.
