WI warns scams in wake of Boston bombing

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin residents are being warned to watch for scams when donating to charities that help people affected by the deadly Boston Marathon bombing.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says scams could occur online, as well as through the mail and phone calls.

Residents are urged to guard their social network messages, emails, texts and photos. They should not click on suspicious links or attachments.

Most charities are registered through the state and have legitimate names. Residents can look them up online at http://www.charitynavigator.org/ or http://www.bbb.org/us/charity/ .

Officials say donors should pay by check, as well as debit or credit card. They should not donate cash.
