Meet Meredith the penguin: Henry Vilas Zoo's new resident

MADISON (WKOW) -- The public got to meet the Henry Vilas Zoo's newest friend this weekend.

The zoo introduced an African penguin named Meredith to a crowd on Saturday. The zoo's director, Ronda Schwetz, says that species is currently endangered, so the zoo hopes to strengthen the population.

While it may seem like Wisconsin spring weather would be too warm for Meredith, Schwetz says the breed is not native to chilly temperatures like other penguins.

"She has to adapt just like we do and she has a nice layer of blubber and [is] really built with her feathers and her body to kind of retain her heat when it gets cold," says Schwetz.

Meredith was hatched in January. Apparently, she's an avid painter and has been busy creating some artwork since then. Some of that work went on sale to the public this weekend.
