New breakfast program headed to Longfellow Elementary

Eau Claire (WQOW) - We all know how important it is to start the day off with a good breakfast. A pilot program at a local school will help give kids the chance to do just that for free.

The Eau Claire School District is expanding its free breakfast program at Longfellow elementary to include every student.  Right now, 78 percent of students at Longfellow are eligible for free and reduced meals.

"We realize that breakfast is really an important part of the school day, and it is the most important part of the day, and so we know students that are well-nourished do better academically, they have fewer trips to the nurse, there are fewer behavioral problems in class, and they're just overall better nourished students," says Sue Brown, Eau Claire School District's Food Nutrition Director.

The district will be reimbursed by the federal government for most of the meals. The pilot program will run for one year beginning in the fall.
