Cinnamon challenge dangerous new trend

GREEN BAY (WKOW) -- There's a new warning about the phenomenon called "The Cinnamon Challenge."

The dare seems harmless, but doctors say it can have lasting effects.

The challenge directs people to swallow a spoonful of ground cinnamon in 60 seconds without drinking anything.

The American Association of Poison Control Centers says there were 51 calls related to the challenge in 2011.

In the first 6 months of 2012, there were 178 calls, including 30 cases that included hospitalization.

Doctors say when the dust is inhaled it can lead to trouble breathing and long-term lung damage.

They say the health risks are unnecessary and avoidable.
