WI DNR urges spring cleaners to recycle e-waste

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) – Wisconsin environmental officials want people to recycle used electronics rather than just tossing them in the trash during spring cleaning.

A state Department of Natural Resources survey in 2010 estimated Wisconsin households had 7.4 million televisions and 16 percent of them were unused. It also found that 4.3 million people had computers and about 26 percent were unused.

State law prohibits dumping of most electronics in landfills.  According to the DNR, the steel, aluminum, plastic and other metals inside electronics can be valuable commodities if properly recycled.

To find out more about electronic collection events, you can head to the E-Cycle Wisconsin page on the DNR's website. Here's a link.

The page lists more than 400 collection sites around the state.
