Dozens killed when building collapses in Bangladesh

SAVAR, BANGLADESH (AP) -- An eight-story building collapses in Bangladesh, killing at least 87 people Wednesday morning.

The building housed several garment factories, which stirred memories of the fatal fire at a garment factor in November that killed 112 people. In this recent incident, many people are still trapped in the jumbled mess of shattered concrete and bricks.

Workers in the Rana Plaza building said it developed such severe cracks the day before, local news channels reported it. A manager from the factory assured workers it was still safe, so they went inside, despite being hesitant. About an hour after they started working, the building collapsed.

Tens of thousands of people have gathered at the sight. Firefighters and soldiers are working with local volunteers to search for survivors.
