Study finds 40% of parents misuse cold medicine for young children

ANN ARBOR (WKOW) -- A University of Michigan study finds four in 10 parents are misusing cough and cold medicine when treating young children.

Results were released this week of a C.S. Mott Children's Hospital national survey that found 40 percent of parents reported giving cough medicine or multi-symptom cough and cold medicine to their children under four years old.

1 in 4 parents reported giving decongestants to their children under four years old.

Over-the-counter medicines have warning labels that say these products should not be given to children under four years old. In 2008, the FDA advised these medicines can be hazardous for young children.
