Milwaukee Art Museum honors gallery owner

Posted:

MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- The Milwaukee Art Museum has put together an exhibition honoring the work of a long time local gallery owner.

Cissie Peltz died of complications due to breast cancer April 3. She was 85.

She opened the Peltz Gallery in Milwaukee in 1989, supporting female and minority artists. She even held an annual "Remarkable Women" show.

She received attention as a cartoonist in the 1950s, in a field dominated by men at the time under the gender-neutral pen name "Cissie." She was published in the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Milwaukee Journal and the Saturday Review.

The exhibit will feature her cartoons along with works by friends and artists she admired including Warrington Colescott, John Nicholson Colt and others. It will be on view through the middle of May.
