Area fifth graders try college on for size

EAU CLAIRE (WOQW) - Area fifth graders are getting a taste of college life.

It's all part of the Blugold Beginnings program. Thursday and Friday, hundreds of fifth graders will tour the UW Eau Claire campus. They'll meet with current students and even sit in on a mock class.

Blugold Beginnings Program Coordinator Lissa Greer said, "At the end of the day, I would love for all of the students to just know that college is an option for them, and to walk away with the experience of understanding what it could be like for their futures and how it could benefit them."

The hope is that once kids learn what it's like to go to college, they'll realize that a higher education is something they can achieve, and they'll be inspired to chase their goals.

Stilson Elementary 5th grader, Aliyah Anderson said, "Well, I want to be a vet, so math and science would be a good thing to know."

Robert Mullenberg, also from Stilson Elementary said, "That college is important for almost everyone, college is important for people."

Thursday was the first of a two day tour. When all is said and done, 17-hundred fifth graders will have toured UW Eau Claire's campus.
