Meet more than 400 alpacas at the Midwest Alpaca Festival


MADISON (WKOW) -- More than 400 alpacas will compete at the 2013 Great Midwest Alpaca Festival this weekend at the Alliant Energy Center.

The event will be on Saturday and Sunday at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum dome at the Alliant Energy Center. You will have a chance to get up close and personal with the alpacas, who are a cousin of the llama.

On Saturday,the event runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Sunday, the event goes from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. There will be a $6 parking fee.

Alpaca breeders from throughout the country will be at the event all weekend to answer questions about the growing business of breeding alpacas.

Industry experts will also lead seminars on business planning, marketing, fiber processing and animal husbandry.

There will be a silent auction to raise money for the Great Midwest Alpaca Festival Scholarship at the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine and the Alpaca Research Foundation.
