Six dead, including children, after shooting in IL

MANCHESTER, IL (WKOW)-- Six people are dead, including two children, and another child is critically injured after a man with a shotgun opened fire in an Illinois apartment.

Police say 34 year-old Rick Smith shot and killed Brittney Luark and her unborn child, James Ralson, their two sons Nolan and Brantley as well as Luark's grandmother, Jo Ann Sinclair.  It happened early Wednesday morning.

Smith also shot and wounded a six year old girl, but took her to a neighbor's house before fleeing the scene. She is now recovering at a hospital in Springfield.

After a car chase, Smith was shot during an exchange of gun fire with police. He later died at a hospital.

Investigators say the motive is still unclear, but Smith's brother says the suspect was involved in a child custody battle with the daughter of one of the victims.
