Fire crews find hidden drug lab in Racine

RACINE (WKOW) -- Firefighters in Racine found more than just a fire when they were called to a home Friday night.

Fire officials say there was smoke coming from a second floor apartment when firefighters arrived on scene on Parkview Drive. Investigators say once they put the fire out, they found a hidden drug lab.

Our Milwaukee affiliate WISN-TV met up with the owner Saturday morning. He was just returning from a hospital nursing home where he had been recovering from a leg injury.

"I know my nephew was using the upstairs and that but he didn't saying nothing, he just wanted a place to crash up there and take care of the house," says Richard Schoedel. "I never go upstairs, I can't with my leg and all, I don't know nothing about this."

A hazardous materials team took the drugs and other materials for investigation. Crews remained on scene until Saturday morning. Officials have not said if anyone has been arrested.

Firefighters said the fire caused about $1,000 in damage to the home.
