WI bill proposal adds penalties for those who harass lawmakers

MADISON (WKOW) -- A legislation introduced by Representative Garey Bies of Sister Bay would give harsher punishment for harassing lawmakers.

Bies proposed people who harass any member of the Legislation or their families, including acts of striking, shoving, or kicking for no reason should face harsher penalties.

Harming a public official is illegal in Wisconsin.  This legislation proposal broadens the span of acts that would be considered threats.

Lawmakers who have been victimized support the proposal.  Some civil rights groups are saying that this legislation is redundant and could lead to infringement of free speech.
