Sinkhole raises questions for Eau Claire man

Eau Claire (WQOW) - An Eau Claire man is looking for answers after noticing a sinkhole in his backyard.

Charles Leffingwell discovered the sinkhole last week, in his yard on East Hamilton Avenue. He says he's never seen anything like it before; an approximately six foot wide hole has opened up, and it sinks down about four feet. He says the sinkhole may have formed over an old well, and is now looking at his options for fixing the problem.

"We need help figuring out what to do. I think there's environmental concerns that we have to pay attention to. Because anything you put down this hole might end up in the groundwater directly without being filtered through layers of sand and dirt and stuff like that," said Leffingwell.

Leffingwell believes the recent snow melt may have helped create the sinkhole. He also says he's concerned the problem could worsen.
